Your Questions Answered

Wheelchairs & Walleyes strives to make each and everyone’s experience with us as accommodating as we possibly can. To ensure this we have consulted with physical and occupational therapists.

When registering, please let us know of any specific requests/accommodations your child/young adult may need for their day with us. You can contact us at jennifer@wheelchairsandwalleyes.com.

In the meantime, below are some of the FAQs regarding the Wheelchairs & Walleyes Tournament and Celebration day experience.

We offer various corporate partner and donor packages. If you are interested, you can contact us by phone, email, or form submission. We look forward to partnering with you.

Donations are primarily used to fund the construction of ADA-compliant ramps and other accessibility projects and charity events at fishing locations.

Will the person guiding my child be an experienced fisherman?

Yes, each registrant will be paired with a pro fisherman who has first-hand knowledge of the body of water, the boat being used, and all boating safety regulations.

Is a guardian allowed to go with?
Yes, we require a guardian to go with the registrant. If space allows, we can even have a sibling or second guardian join the fun!
Do we need to be experienced boaters or fishermen?
No, we welcome all levels of experience! We are here to provide an adventure that most kids/young adults with mobility challenges never get to do. The pro you are paired with will have plenty of knowledge to guide you through your fishing experience.
Will poles, tackle, and other equipment be provided?
Yes, everything is provided. Although, if you have a specific life jacket or lucky fishing pole, you are welcome to bring them.
I don’t think my child’s chair/equipment will fit in a fishing boat, is there a way they can still participate?
Absolutely! In addition to fishing boats, we have pontoon access as well. Please let us know this when registering.
Can my child stay in their wheelchair?
Yes, any child who needs the support of their wheelchair can stay in it while fishing out of the boat. Trained staff will be present to help with loading and unloading from the boat.
My child doesn’t use a wheelchair, but has a mobility impairment. Can they still participate?
Yes, we are here to support any child/young adult with a physical disability, whether they use a wheelchair, walker, canes, etc.
Do we have to fish the duration of the tournament?
No, if you wish to go back to shore earlier, your guide will bring you back. We want everyone to be comfortable and happy!
Is this a serious tournament?
The tournament can be serious (there is a weigh-in at the end) or as easy-going as you want it to be! Some registrants just enjoy the boat ride and getting to play with the bait, while others may be out to catch the biggest fish of the day.
What happens if it’s too cold, too hot, or too windy?
Safety is our top concern. We will always make the best judgement-call based on what’s right for the registrants. For the hot days, we provide cooling cloths and water for on the boat. On shore, we have a tent for shade. Please check the forecast and dress appropriately. Keep in mind that even though it may be warm on land, a breeze on the water can make it a bit cooler in the boat. Bring layers. If your child has sensitivities to these weather conditions, we completely understand if you decide at the last minute not to participate. If we have to cancel the tournament due to extreme conditions, we will try to have other activities in it’s place. Please follow us on Facebook for up-to-date announcements.
Will there be accessible bathrooms or a place to change my child?
Yes, at the location of the loading ramp and celebration, we will have a portable, enclosed space with room to comfortably change your child. If the location of the event does not have accessible bathrooms, we will be sure there is an accessible portable bathroom.
Will there be accessible parking?
Yes, we do our best at each event location to make accessible parking available to all.
What else happens that day?
Fun happens! We’ll have a tournament weigh-in complete with prizes along with a celebration including inflatable games for all abilities, face painting, food, and more!
What is the schedule for the day?
Times may vary for each event. We will provide you with a schedule for your specific day. If the location of the tournament is new, we will start with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new accessible loading ramp. We generally do that right away in the morning and will immediately follow with the tournament. While the kids fish, we will begin the on-shore festivities for those waiting and will continue celebration after the tournament and weigh-in. There will also be an awards presentation for the tournament winners. Please follow us on Facebook for up-to-date announcements.
How much does this cost?
The tournament and celebration are free!
